Description: Missale Romanum Ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum PII V. Pont. Max. Iussu Editum, et Clementis VIII. Primum, Nunc Denvo Urbani Papæ Octavi Actoritate Recognitum. In quo Missæ propriæ de Sanctis ad longum positæ sunt ad maiorem celebrantium commoditatem. Antverpiæ, Ex Officina Plantiniana Apud Vidaum & Heredes Balthasaris Moreti, 1679. 624 p, 23 p, 36 p, 30 p, 53 p, 20th century leather binding with clasp, 12.5 x 9”, 4to. In fair condition. Minor instances of scuffing to corners and edges with two age-stains at either end of clasp. Three small pen marks in black ink on left edge of front board. A small pen mark afflicts the top compartment of the spine. A few superficial scratches affect the surface of the leather. Clasp will technically work, but a previous user added leather tapes to some pages at bottom edge, so it's very difficult to close. Small patch of crushing at right edge of front fly leaf. All edges gilt. Normal toning throughout text-blocks with normal instances of age-staining and finger-soiling. Water or tea dampness staining permeates the text at the bottom edge, does not affect the aesthetic or text. Binding is tight and intact. Please see photos. The Council of Trent (first convened in 1545 and concluded in 1563) reaffirmed and codified traditional Roman Catholic doctrine over and against the claims and practices of Protestantism. The first Missal revised to reflect Tridentine teachings saw print in Rome in 1570. Soon after, Christopher Plantin acquired the exclusive right to print missals and other liturgical books for the Low Countries, Spain and the Spanish colonies. Plantin’s son-in-law Joannes Moretus (the Latinized version of the name Jan Moerentorf) became director of the press following Plantin’s death. Balthasar Moretus or Balthasar I Moretus (1574 –1641) was a Flemish printer and head of the Officina Plantiniana, the printing company established by his grandfather Christophe Plantin in Antwerp in 1555. He was the son of Martina Plantin and Jan Moretus. Balthasar III Moretus (1646-1696) was the head of the Officina Plantiniana from 1674 to 1696. On 1 September 1692 he was ennobled by the King of Spain, receiving the title of jonkheer. The age of humanism was by now over. Production consisted almost exclusively of liturgical works, both for domestic sales and for the entire Hispanic world. The missal contains the texts and prayers necessary for celebrating the Mass, including many pages of musical notation. A stunning Early Plantin Press Missale Romanum.
