Synonyms - Acer shirasawanum'Yasemin' This is an beautiful upright tree with deeply divided, seven-lobed or nine-lobed leaves shiny purple-red leaves. It has leaves that emerge cherry red in spring, changing to bronze-green in the summer. Fall color is a brilliant purple-red. It has tiny, purple-red flowers in small, pendent corymbs in spring followed by red-winged fruit in late summer . A fairly fast growing tree , it will grow to about 10' tall x 4' wide in 10 years. Hardy to -20 degrees. USDA zone 5. Medicinal use : None known Edible parts of Japanese Maple: The sap contains a certain amount of sugar and can either be used as a drink, or can be concentrated into a syrup by boiling off the water. The syrup is used as a sweetener on many foods. Other uses of Japanese Maple: The leaves are packed around apples, rootcrops etc to help preserve them.
