His squadron covered Omaha Beach on D-Day and provided air support for Gen. Patton’s 3rd Army in the Battle of the Bulge.Republic P-47D-2-RA Thunderbolt, Serial No. 42-22535 – “Kathleen Ann”, Flown by Lt. Raymond R. Withers (4 aerial victories), 360th FS / 356th FG, 8th Air Force, USAAF Base Martlesham Heath, UK 1943After earning his pilot wings and commission in 1943, Raymond Withers flew 106 combat missions as a fighter pilot with the 8th Air Force, achieving four air kills. His awards include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit with cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross with cluster, Air Medal with nine clusters, and numerous other accolades. Withers retired as a Colonel from active duty in 1972 after 30 years of service in the Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force, serving during World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam Conflict.Republic P-47C-5-RE Thunderbolt, Serial No. 41-6400 – “Indianapolis”, Flown by Lt. Vernon “Vern” Boehle, 334th FS / 4th FG, 8th Air Force, RAF Debden, UK 1943uVernon Boehle grew up near Indianapolis, Indiana. Around 1940, Vernon went to Canada to join the Royal Canadian Air Force and became a Spitfire pilot. He then went to fight in the UK as a member of the 71st Eagle Squadron. When the United States entered the war, he transferred to the U.S.A.A.F, flying P-47 Thunderbolts. On September 9, 1943, after sustaining damage from a mission, P-47C 41-6400 QP-O “Indianapolis” lost its engine, causing Vern to ditch into the channel 45 miles south of Beachy Head. He spent 48 hours in his dinghy before being rescued.As with all older decal sets, precaution should be taken.
