While most buds refused to adapt to the soil and climate of California, one flourished. After surviving the great freeze of 1913, it was given the name Fuerte, the Spanish word for “strong.” The Fuerte tree that Schmidt found in Mexico created California’s avocado industry, introducing the United States to one of the most cold-hardy varieties of avocado.Even when they are not fruiting, Fuerte Avocado trees are beautiful tropical trees.
